George Strait

Influenced by country singers Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bob Wills and Hank Williams, Strait made his way to Nashville, Tennessee in 1981.  Strait signed with MCA, beginning a music career that as of early 2005 has had 51 #1 country singles and the career record for Country Music Association nominations with seventy-three. Strait was one of the best-selling country singers of the 1980s, with hits like "Unwound", " Ocean Front Property " and "Fool Hearted Memory" to name a few. George Strait drew from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, staying close to traditional country, able to survive the invasion of pop-country singers like Garth Brooks in the 1990's and in doing so, became one of the most famous and influential singers of the decade.
